Lingerie wardrobe is a section where different characters who share their love for lingerie tell about their most favourite things and what inspires them. Our guest today is illustrator Logan Spector whose work and lingerie as outerwear looks I admire. I asked Logan to share some lingerie styling tips with Garterblog readers.
“Hi, my name is Logan! I’m an illustrator, silk scarf designer, and I’m obsessed with lingerie.
Nearly half of my wardrobe is lingerie and loungewear, and I love planning my outfits around the lingerie I want to wear that day. My most beautiful articles of clothing are almost all lingerie, and it feels so sad to hide such beautiful things, so I frequently style my lingerie as outerwear.
When shopping for lingerie, one of my biggest considerations is how often I think I’ll actually wear the piece. Fine lingerie often comes with a high price tag, so I always want to be certain that I’ll wear the piece often. For me, this decision comes down to fabric types, comfort, aesthetic, and most of all… versatility.
If I can imagine a piece of lingerie creatively styled in several outfits that I can wear out of the house, I’m much more likely to buy it.
Below, I’ve put together a list of types of lingerie pieces that I think are particularly versatile as both underwear and outerwear.
High Neck Bras
In my opinion, high neck bras are the perfect introduction to the “lingerie as outerwear” trend! They’re easy to layer under any shirt or dress with a suitable neckline, and they add quite a bit of visual interest to an otherwise plain outfit. My personal favourite high neck bra from my collection is the Hecate Bralet by Karolina Laskowska, and these bras by I.D. Sarrieri, Bordelle, and Sofia Luzon are high on my wishlist.
Longline Bras
Longline bras look fantastic worn with high waisted skirts or pants, and it’s an easy way to show off the details on a favourite bra. During cooler weather or days when I’m feeling more modest, I like to pair a longline bra with a blazer, cardigan, or silk robe for a bit more coverage. They also look fabulous layered with a high neck bralette, lingerie cape, or harnesses for a more lingerie-focused look.
My favourite longline bra that I own is this one by Dita Von Teese from a few years back, but it seems to be sold out in most places. A few other longline bras that I think would make versatile wardrobe additions are these ones by Studio Pia and Bordelle.
Lingerie Capes
Capes are the best! A short lace or mesh cape makes a beautiful addition to an evening look. I particularly adore every cape made by Karolina Laskowska, and I also admire this cape by The Nylon Swish. If a short cape isn’t dramatic enough for you, you might enjoy this long sparkly black cape by The Giving Bride or this hooded harness cape from Apatico.
Bodysuits
Bodysuits are lingerie items that can essentially be styled like shirts. With bodysuits that have interesting necklines like this one by Goblin Fruit, the styling possibilities are endless! A few other bodysuits that I think would be fantastic as outerwear are these ones by Thistle and Spire, Bordelle, and Dottie’s Delights.
Corsets
Although corsets are intended as foundation wear, I think they truly shine as outerwear garments! A comfortable and beautiful corset can elevate an outfit to the next level by adding drama and structure to an outfit.
Loungewear
Many of my favourite outfits incorporate loungewear, and I’ll almost always choose to buy a nice silk slip over a new bra any day. I love the comfort and ease of wear that loungewear provides, and it’s fun to wear pajamas out of the house while still feeling fancy. Silk camisoles like this one by Josie Natori make excellent shirts on hot days, and they look lovely layered with a bra with interesting straps or a high neck. Silk pajama pants are my go-to for every “fancy but comfy” outfit that I want to wear. Robes also look fabulously elegant out of the house, in my opinion.
I hope these styling suggestions have given you a few outfit ideas! If you style an outfit inspired by some of my tips here, I would love to see them on Instagram (@logandria).“
